York Region Science and Technology Fair UMS Wins Three Silver Awards and Special Award For Innovation
Over the last year, UMS has invested a lot of time and resources into enhancing our science and technology programs. Along with robotics and engineering initiatives, we added more advanced apps to assist with differentiation of learning. This year we also added a specialized teacher to expand our work in Integrated Studies projects. This is our second year attending the York Region Science and Technology Fair in April. The projects submitted were very intensive and had been worked on since the start of the year. In addition to the presentation, the judges expected a detailed lab report that followed the stages of scientific method or design cycle.
The students’ projects were as follows:
Olivea Kim – “Measuring the Amount Of Thermal Energy Produced By Compost “.
Category – Earth and Environmental Science
Victoria Zhang – “Float, Absorb, Clean! A Biodegradable Oil Absorber” Category – Biotechnology
Majd Bayouq – “Vehicle Emissions Filter” Category – Early and Environmental Science
Kahyl Jadavji – “Adding A Spring To Your Step” Category – Health Sciences
Gabriel Hanna – “A Garbage Bin For The Ocean”. Category – Earth and Environmental Science
There were 190 participants from over 40 schools across York Region and the judges came from different faculties at York University.
All our students did exceptionally well, with Olivea Kim, Kahyl Jadavji and Gabriel Hanna being awarded silver medals.
Gabriel Hanna also won a special award for innovation in water protection and
environmental science. Congratulations!
