As a part of our Library program, UMS is pleased to participate in the Forest of Reading program. This program encourages youth to be a part of evaluating and enjoying the love of literature.
The Blue Spruce Award exposes students from Casa to Grade Two to develop the skill of evaluating a picture book based on the story and the pictures. Children vote to determine the winning book of the Blue Spruce Award after they have read or have been read to each of these titles.
The Silver Birch Express Award provides a list of nominated titles which is aimed at children in Grades Three and Four, and provides books with many different reading levels. There is a variety of fiction and non-fiction material which appeals to all. The Silver Birch Fiction Award is geared toward readers in Grade Five and Six. From fantastical to serious tales, the program provides a wide range of stories for readers to enjoy! The Silver Birch Non-Fiction Award focuses on Non-Fiction titles for Grade Five and Six students. In this program, students will explore real life stories and facts ranging from history to hockey; these books are definitely conversation starters.
In addition, several students have taken their interest in reading, one step beyond the book to demonstrate their passion connecting with literature.
