“We cannot prevent adversity, but adversity can make us more resilient.” ~ Kenneth Ginsburg.
The 7 C’s of promoting resilience are: Control, Competence, Coping, Confidence, Connection, Character, and Contribution.
Control – Provide opportunities which allow your child a feeling of having control.
Competence – Open up the discussion and allow the child to express how he/she is handling the obstacles which they are facing and how they are managing them.
Coping – The manner in which a child demonstrates their coping strategies must be respected.
Confidence – A child’s confidence can increase by identifying the efforts with what a child has accomplished rather than on luck alone. Celebrate single successes along the journey.
Connection – Allow a child to express their feelings while offering unconditional support to him/her.
Character – A child’s character develops when they are able to identify their gifts and talents along with a personal value system.
Contribution – Finding meaning and ways a child can contribute to others and to situations will allow them to feel validated and that they matter. ~ Kenneth Ginsburg
